Working Moms Are a Business’s Best-Kept Secret

I recently had an interview for a consulting opportunity that was unlike any call I’ve ever had with a potential employer. The conversation was with the CEO, and after I explained that I began consulting to spend more time with my daughter, he started talking about working moms.

“Working moms are the key to success for businesses. After about eight maternity leaves with our team, our working moms return even better at their jobs, exceeding goals, and never missing a beat. I don’t know how they do it.”

I thought about this so much afterward—he’s right, but how? How do we do it?

I think there are a few reasons. For starters, when we birth our babies, we also birth a new version of ourselves—stronger than we ever thought possible, with new values shaped by our protective instincts. Honestly, at least for me, I felt like a total badass after I had my kids.

On the flip side, we also question every single thing we do and can suffer from crippling imposter syndrome, which makes us work even harder so we don’t fail. What a mindf*ck.

Beyond that, working moms are often questioned by corporate society. I know I’m not the only one who has felt this. In fact, my last job was so toxic for working parents (honestly, for non-parents too) that I quit—no job lined up, no plan in place. I just knew I didn’t want to dread every day, or have zero flexibility to see my kids during the day or have lunch with them. I took a couple of months off to enjoy summer (and get through my first trimester with my son), and then I started consulting on the side.

I recognize that being able to quit my job and work remotely are privileges not everyone has, and I don’t take that lightly. My heart aches for parents who don’t have the choice and feel stuck in a job, or with a boss, that doesn’t value family flexibility.

Why Working Moms Are the Ultimate Asset for Companies

Working moms are a business’s best-kept secret because we’ve learned to thrive in chaos, juggle the impossible, and show up with resilience that can’t be taught. It’s time for more companies to realize that empowering parents isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s a smart business strategy. When working moms succeed, everyone wins.

Trust Yourself: The Most Important Lesson for Working Moms

To every working mom: trust yourself. You are stronger, smarter, and more capable than you think. Don’t let outdated systems make you doubt the immense value you bring to the table. Be confident in your worth, and don’t settle for workplaces that can’t see it. Because when you stand in your power, you not only change your own life—you help change the world for your children, and for all of us.
